Tutorial 1 of 5

Your first photo edit

Beginner 4 min

Open a photo, balance light and color, and export an image with Lumina.

Open a photo

Launch Lumina and try the bundled Alpine escape sample. Open photo accepts browser-decodable JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP and AVIF files. You can also drop a photo onto the canvas. Photos must be smaller than 30 MB and no larger than 16 megapixels. Convert HEIC or RAW files with the separate converter first.

Find your light

Start in Develop. Exposure changes overall brightness in stops. Highlights and Shadows affect bright and dark areas more strongly. Auto enhance uses the image brightness to suggest an exposure, with gentle highlight, shadow and vibrance adjustments. It is a simple deterministic correction, not an AI model.

Double-click any slider to reset it to its neutral value.

The histogram shows the distribution of pixel luminance. The percentages beneath it count pixels at the very dark and bright ends. A spike at an edge can indicate clipping, but it can also be intentional.

Try a look

The bottom strip offers six starting points. A look replaces your light and color adjustments; Undo restores them. Use Develop to refine any look. Temperature warms or cools the image, while Tint shifts green and magenta. Saturation affects all color; Vibrance gives more weight to less saturated colors.

Fine-tune individual colors

The Color mixer in Develop works on eight color bands: reds, oranges, yellows, greens, aquas, blues, purples and magentas. Choose Hue, Saturation or Luminance, then move a band's slider. Hue shifts a band toward its neighbors (up to 30°), Saturation makes it richer or quieter, and Luminance brightens or darkens it. Neutral grays are never affected, and neighboring bands blend smoothly. For example, lower the Saturation of Greens and raise the Luminance of Blues for a calmer landscape sky.

Compare, zoom and export

Compare shows the original and edited image with the same crop and rotation. Move the comparison slider to reveal more of either version. Press B to toggle comparison. Press 1 or click the zoom percentage for a 100% view, use + and − or Ctrl + mouse wheel to zoom, and drag the photo to pan when it is larger than the window. F or 0 fits the photo again.

Export photo opens size, format and quality controls. Choose Full size, a long-edge preset for 4K, web galleries, full HD, social media or email, or enter a custom size. Copy image puts a PNG on your clipboard for pasting into another app. JPEG uses a white background for transparent pixels. PNG preserves transparency; quality does not apply to PNG. WebP export depends on browser support. Exports omit original camera and GPS metadata.

Reuse an edit on another photo

Copy settings (Ctrl+Shift+C) remembers your Develop, Tone Lab and color mixer settings. Open another photo and choose Paste settings (Ctrl+Shift+V) to apply the same look. Crop, text and the photo itself are not copied. Undo removes a paste.

Keep an editable copy

Save project downloads a .lumina.json file containing your image and editable settings. Edits autosave in this browser, and Lumina reopens your last edit the next time you start it. Recent lists the eight most recent edited projects with their date; remove entries you no longer need. Browser storage can be cleared, so keep project files for an independent backup. If you are signed in to usefulweb.site with Google Drive connected, Save to Drive and Open from Drive in the top bar store the same project file in your Drive.
